A studio practice built on three mediums

Joshua grew up sketching the barns and back roads around Plain City before studying painting and sculpture in college. Photography came later, first as a way to document his sculptures and paintings, then as a full practice of its own.

Today his studio in Dublin holds all three side by side — a painting in progress on one wall, a welded sculpture taking shape on a workbench, and prints from a recent shoot pinned above the desk. He sees them as three ways of paying attention to the same subject: this particular corner of Ohio, and the people who call it home.

When he isn't in the studio, you'll usually find him on location in Powell, Plain City, or London, Ohio — photographing a family, scouting a site for an outdoor sculpture, or sketching a landscape that will later become a painting.

Artist statement

"I'm interested in the quiet moments — the way morning light sits on a soybean field outside Plain City, or the particular slouch of an old barn on London-Lafayette Road. My paintings and sculptures start from direct observation, then get simplified and reworked in the studio until only the essential shapes remain."

"Photography keeps me honest. It forces me to look at what's actually in front of me before I start editing the world in my head. I try to bring that same honesty back into the painting and sculpture work."
